What if?
These two simple words are the foundation of speculative fiction, and the genre has a long history of using them to explore worlds of danger and disaster.
What if a cabal of evil wizards bent the laws of magic to enact their will? What if the universe is filled with hostile sentient life? What if society crumbles under the stresses of climate change?
But the phrase "What if?" is pregnant with more possibilities than apocalypses and dystopias. In fact, "What if?" is a question people ask themselves on a daily basis.
What if we had enough money to pay the rent this month? What if I had been a better friend to him? What if the world wasn't run by unjust systems? What if I actually felt empowered to do something about it?
My writing exists at the intersection of these two avenues of questioning. My characters (fugitive sorcerers, electricity thieves, and sentient fungi alike) seek agency, joy, and connection in futuristic and fantastic worlds that embrace difficult realities while pushing against tropes of doom and powerlessness.
